Wills - Greenbrier County, Virginia.

Will Book Vol 1 from 1777-1833 for Greenbrier Co. Va has been abstracted primarily extracting the names from the wills, appraisal and sales/settlements. The exception to this is where the wills list neighbors . etc. in describing land. The deeds treat this adequately so these names were not extracted but an attempt was made to list all others. Some other criteria used. Many times a date of an event is not available for a sale or an appraisal. Where the court filing date is available, it is provided therefore some time an appraisal is listed after the sale as it may have been months before the court got this information and filed same. Where ‘heir’ is used, the will did not define the relationship of the individual. Also, most of the wills list a relative by the given name only. I have attached the surname to all given names to assist in indexing. In the appraisal and sales, the term ‘note on’ refers to notes and or bond showing a debt. On the negros or slaves where the name does not define the gender by a customary name the (f) (m) are used to define the gender. The numbers in the left column are the page numbers from the ledger.
